Paul Smit Consultancy - Loopbaancoaching
 In English

LOB is short for 'Loopbaan Oriëntatie en Begeleiding' or Career Orientation and Guidance. It's my field of expertise.

What I am.
I am a behavioural counsellor in (dual) careercoaching in secondary and sometimes higher education (QFR 4-6), in HRM and in the sportsindustry.

What I do.
I profile, coach, train and guide pupils, students, (dual career) athletes and work with their parents, coaches and trainers. I regularly work with adults who struggle with career dilemma's and transition issues. I work in teams, classes, groups or individual.

Where am I active and who do I work for?
I work as a (sports)careercounsellor and a talentcoach at a topsporttalentschool for secondary education in the Netherlands (south). I am also active in different (Euregional) topsport- and educational projects either connected to school or as a freelancer.

What do I use?
I use brainmodels, interviews, aptitude and personality tests, questionnaires, selfdirected searches and Personal Profiles, type Indicators, fysical- / Motor Profiles by testing type indicators in training situations or other physical simulations and linking physical features to behaviourial indicators (there is more on this topic in the dutch language on the Action Types page), videoanalysis and assessments.

Where do I focus on?
We focus on motorbehaviour, learningstrategies, abilities, aptitudes, competences, motivational drivers and passions.

What is the profit?
It wil make you better! This kind of pretty rational guidance will upgrade personal - and teamperformance. In transitioncoaching it will get you to the next level.

What do sportscoaches and trainers in top- and elite sports ask of me?
To provide them with an valid and practical profile of their athletes. It makes athletes more aware of their potential and skills therefore will improve communication between athlete and trainer/coach.

What groups needs special attention in my opinion?
Artists, innovators, creators, technicians with limited linguistic skills, holistic thinkers. In the music- and entertainment industry for example is need for better understanding of human behaviour. I think of it as talentguidance in popsport.

Idealism
We have entered the era of digital information, communication and globalisation. We now speak of career-orientation and -planning. It is a complex developmental proces but still so many people think that a careerchoice is a single choice for life. I feel a responsibility in putting effort in updating our educational system. Especially with my knowledge on motoristic features, learningstrategies, competences and aptitude recognition.

Sir Ken Robinson is worldwide a very inspiring and influential person in our field of ecucation. You can view his talks on his own website.

We all live on this one planet where every part of it can be 'easily' reached and yet we experience huge differences in educational systems. Why is it so difficult to learn from each other? More realistic for me is to leave my comfortzone regularly and share my good practices in our Euregion, our provence and our country and learn from others.
The 'spread' should do the rest!

Specialties
Guiding and coaching the self directed search of (young) potentials and help them to find a careerpath that works out succesfully for them. I have a strong interest in more vulnerable groups that found their talents in art and sports.

To talk and teach passionately about this work.

Career counselling is also about observing posture and handedness, the position of the feet, hips, neck and legs, analysing walking patterns, analysing handwriting and determining which one of your two eyes and two ears is the dominant one.

It’s where psychology meets biology.
Puzzling on a personal profile is what I do best. Clients expect me that after research and counseling they can come up with a reliable, recognisable, valid, fair and trustworthy profile.

As a applied scientist it is also part of my job to implement recent scientific insights in educational and career counselling methods. Recent inspirational input comes for example from Dr. Iain Mcgilchrist.

Dr. Iain Mcgilchrist is a very experienced (neuro)psychiatrist who also takes interest in neuro-imaging, philosophy, psychology and English Literature. I read his book “The Master and his Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World” (http://www.iainmcgilchrist.com).

I would like to share some very interesting text with you that comes from an early chapter in his book. It explanes 'handedness' for a part.

Brain organisation varies from individual to individual.
Then there is the question of individual difference in hemisphere  dominance and laterality. I will speak throughout of ‘the right hemisphere’ and ‘the left hemisphere’ as though these concepts were universally applicable. Clearly that cannot be the case. The terms represent generalisations about the human condition. Handedness is related to such organisation, but not in any straightforward way: for this reason, I will have little to say about handedness, fascinating as it is, in this book – except where it seems legitimately to reflect evidence of hemisphere preference.

In talking about any biological variable, one is making some sort of generalisation. Men are taller than women, but the fact that some women are taller than some men doesn’t render the point invalid. Handedness is one such variable. The situation is complicated by the fact that handedness is not a single phenomenon; there are degrees of handedness in different individuals for different activities (and different ‘footedness’, ‘earedness’, and ‘eyedness’, for that matter).

However, in the West at present, about 89% of people are broadly right-handed, and the vast majority of these have speech and the semantic languages in the left hemisphere – let’s call this the standard pattern. In the other 11%, who are broadly left-handed, there will be variable conformations, which logically must follow one of three patterns: the standard pattern, a simple inversion of the standard pattern, or some rearrangement. The majority (about 75%) of this 11% still have their speech centres in the left hemisphere, and would appear to follow broadly the standard pattern. It is therefore only about 5% of the population overall who are known NOT to lateralise for speech in the left hemisphere. Of these some might have a simple inversion of the hemispheres , with everything that normally happens in the right hemisphere happening in the left and vice versa; there is little significance in this from the point of view of this book, except that throughout one would have to read ‘right’ for  ‘left’ and ‘left’ for ‘right’.

It is only the third group, less than 5% of the population, who, it has been posited, may be truly different in their cerebral organisation: a subset of left-handers, as well as some people with other conditions, irrespective of handedness, such as, probably, schizophrenia and dyslexia, and possibly conditions such as schizotype, some forms of autism, Asperger’s syndrome and some ‘savant’ conditions, who may have a partial inversion of the standard pattern, leading to brain functions being lateralised in unconventional combinations. For them the normal partitioning of functions breaks down. This may confer special benefits, or lead to disadvantages, in the carrying out of different activities. .....................
